Massachusetts Conservation Restriction Stewardship Manual

  About us

Before founding Land Stewardship, Inc., Nicholas Holland was Mass Audubon's Conservation Easement Stewardship Specialist. Nick developed policies and procedures for all aspects of conservation restriction stewardship including baseline documentation and monitoring. He created baseline documentation reports for each of Mass Audubon's 75 conservation restrictions based on field work, registry research and interviews with grantors, landowners and land protection staff.

Nick conducted multiple monitoring visits on each these properties over the past few years. This experience has given him the chance to refine Mass Audubon's baseline documentation report procedures and standards to make the reports more effective for monitoring field work.

While at Audubon, he was principally responsible for drafting the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Office of Environmental Affairs Conservation Restriction Stewardship Training Manual (based on materials developed during a comprehensive pilot project conducted by the Commonwealth) to guide the stewardship work of agency staff and volunteers. Nick also worked on redrafting of this manual to suit the needs of Massachusetts land trusts and conservation commissions. This was the basis for the Massachusetts Conservation Restriction Stewardship Manual released in March of 2006 and distributed to each conservation restriction holder in the Commonwealth.

While at Audubon he was also involved in the oversight of a contract awarded to Mass Audubon's Ecological Extension Service to complete baseline documentation reports on some 57 conservation restrictions held by the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Department of Fish and Game.

He and his wife own Mendon Brook Timberlands, which acquires property throughout New England. Mendon Brook currently owns 2,400 acres of sustainably managed woodlands in Vermont and New Hampshire.

Nick is a graduate of the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (Masters of Forestry), and gained experience in aerial photo interpretation, boundary location and marking, wetlands delineation, stand delineation and mapping, forest inventory, timber marking, and road layout as a member of the Forest Crew at the 8,000-acre Yale Myers Forest in Connecticut.

He is a graduate of Connecticut College, and received a Masters of Science in Management from the Arthur D. Little Management Education Institute. Nick has 20 years of experience in consulting and investment banking at Arthur D. Little, Inc., Ulin, Morton, Bradley & Welling, Inc., and Ulin & Holland, Incorporated.
